Roberta Queiroga and Ito Junichi

Creative Collaboration Salon

This salon ran on Tuesday 20 May at SpaceFor on Tyler Street, 52 Tyler Street, Britomart

There’s something profound about creating on the same surface – trusting the process, embracing spontaneity, and allowing the artwork to emerge organically.’
—Roberta Queiroga

But how does this work in a collaboration across practices and cultures? ArtPoint’s own Roberta Queiroga and Japanese calligrapher and artist Ito Junichi discussed their recent artistic exchange. Roberta completed a residency in Japan in February 2025 and Junichi visited New Zealand in May.

Roberta Queiroga is a founding member of ArtPoint. An award-nominated contemporary visual artist from Brazil, living in Aotearoa New Zealand since 2001, her international renown is attested to by recent artist residencies, including Japan. Roberta is interested in the relationship between the artwork, the viewer and the space, creating work with emotion and spontaneity.

Ito Junichi is a Japanese calligraphy artist whose work blends tradition with contemporary expression across borders. Since 2007, his practice has evolved from street art to international exhibitions, live performances, and major commissions including Formula 1 Japan GP and the G7 Summit. Recognized by Taiwan’s National Palace Museum, he continues to share the spirit of Japanese culture through dynamic, genre-crossing calligraphy.
