FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Discover the Vibrant Artistic Community of Onekiritea/Hobsonville Point at ArtPoint.
On Saturday, 11 November, studios, creative workshops, and exhibitions throw open their doors for ArtPoint, a one-day trail through this thriving artistic community. With more than 25 creatives hosting you across 20 venues, you’re invited to embark on a creative journey. Come discover the many unexpected doors you can walk through, and the remarkable individuals you will meet.
ArtPoint promises a diverse array of artists and artisans, from photographers and painters to ceramicists, fine woodworkers, sculptors, musicians, and writers, offering a unique opportunity to connect with the creative minds shaping the Hobsonville Point cultural landscape.
One of the notable highlights of this event is an open studio day at “The Area” where you can immerse yourself in the world of Mike Weston, best known as half of “hi-performance art partnership “Weston Frizzell” with Otis Frizzell. The collaboration has deep roots in the street art and pop culture melting pot of Auckland’s K’ Rd, relocating to Hobsonville early 2023.
Get an insider’s look into where they paint, dream up prints and poster campaigns, make music, and transform appropriated subject matter into contemporary polemic artworks.
In ‘Onekiritea’, event visitors can join an interactive art pop up on Te Kawerau ā Maki whenua, learn about the history of the area and contribute to a community art work led by renowned Te Kawerau ā Maki artist – Charlotte Graham.
Yueh Luo, an award-winning ceramicist, invites you into her studio to explore the complexity of ceramic objects. Come delve into the intricate relationships between form and space, curvatures, silhouettes, and the historical influences that shape her art. Influenced by Eastern traditions in her childhood and drawn to Modernist aesthetics as she grew up, Luo challenges traditional ceramic forms using lines, curves, and negative space to create a captivating visual dialogue. The meticulous research she conducts to find the perfect glazes for her forms is a testament to her dedication to her craft.
At Sunderland Lounge, an exhibition featuring five local Kiwi/South American artists – Betina Karolyi, Gustavo Freitas, Franchesca Serantes, Jack Cathro, and Roberta Queriego – promises to be a visual feast, showcasing a diverse range of artistic expressions.
Don’t miss the opportunity to witness the vibrant abstract paintings of Coral Noel Yang on display at the Hobsonville Farmers Market, where you can also witness her creative process in action. Even garage doors are opening, allowing you to visit the garage studio of fine woodworker Yan Qiu, whose craftsmanship is nothing short of awe-inspiring.
ArtPoint is a testament to this walkable and wonderful community. It is organised by a passionate team of local arts professionals who generously volunteer their time and expertise to support the creative community. Through this event and future initiatives, the organizers aim to foster a network of artists and creatives in Hobsonville Point, while increasing opportunities for both creators and art enthusiasts to connect, showcase, and savour the arts in this vibrant community.
Join us for ArtPoint on Saturday, 11 November, as we celebrate the rich tapestry of creativity in Onekiritea/Hobsonville Point. It’s a day of art, culture, and community spirit that promises to leave a lasting impression.
