Mike Weston

Perhaps best known as half of collaborative pop-art superbrand Weston Frizzell, (with Otis Frizzell) Mike Weston creates in a variety of media, producing paintings, fine art prints,  electronic music, video, graphic design,  photography. His creative output is characterized by remixing, collage, frequent collaboration, and conceptual application of management strategies to art-activist social and political ends.

A selection  of his art print works number amongst NZ all time biggest selling reproductions, including BEHAVE, (with Otis Frizzell) widely acknowledged as an icon of NZ pop culture. Over a 35+ year creative career he has been a pioneer in the developing street art scenes, and emerging electronic dance music culture building a career as a multi-media artist and creative entrepreneur of international influence.

Born in 1963 in Dunedin NZ  into a media and entertainment family, his formative years were immersed in punk and skater culture and the emerging “Dunedin sound” alternative music movement that moulded his maverick and DIY ethos.

Relocating to Auckland in the post punk dystopian mid 80’s he aligned with the fragmenting Fetus Productions industrial art collective creating electronic sound and image works, screenprinted textiles. He was an innovative force in the warehouse  and rave party culture of late 80’s inner city Auckland and the 90s multicultural melting pot of the Karangahape Rd art, music and party scene .

His current operational identity The Area began in the basement of St Kevins Arcade in 1998 and has transformed and pivoted   through a series  of locations and reinventions and projects, now in 25th year of operation based in a brand new facility in Hobsonville, West Auckland .

Mike moved to Hobsonville in December 2022 with his partner Dr Billie Lythberg.
