Miro – te Reo Maori

1. (verb) (-a,-hia,-tia) to spin, twirl, twist, twine.
2. (verb) (-a,-hia,-ia,-tia) to whirl, swirl.

Over the last 25 years, WF have systematically examined and explored Gordon Walters’ iconic, simplified koru motif, remixing and reapplying it in a contemporary context.

The resultant body of work is a modernist, graphic vocabulary with the Koru at it’s heart.

In the MiRO series Weston Frizzell redirect their Gordon Walters obsession inward, mining the elemental seed motif of Walter’s graphic invention, radially expanded in chromatically sequenced bands to form a swirling vortex, the MIRO that gives the series its name.

Undeniably retro, and evocative of 70’s graphic prints , rug designs and supergraphics, the variations in colour and direction of the central Koru give each work it’s own distinct feeling. While the series titles may hint at representation, the works are abstractions and objects of contemplation and reflection, allowing the viewers interpretation to roam free.

For ArtPoint 2025 Weston Frizzell have created a bespoke limited edition print “MIRO Iho” capturing the airforce heritage of Hobsonville, to a point!

About the Artists

Weston Frizzell is the collaborative identity of artists Otis Frizzell and Mike Weston.

Bold, Innovative and often controversial, the “hi-performance art partnership” has its roots in the street art and pop culture melting pot of Auckland’s K’ Rd of the late 90’s. Their collaboration applied a production-team approach to producing one off and edition painted works, an extensive series of hit limited edition screenprints and digital works, and a constantly expanding range of mass marketed merchandise.
