The strength of many “He toa takitini”

Isabel Alonso

Event Type: Exhibition

Medium/s: Visual Art

My latest body of work is inspired by the phrase “My strength is not that of one, but the strength of many” from the well-known Māori proverb that speaks of the importance of community and family in overcoming challenges through coming together.

Victory, benefit, prosperity is often built upon the support and contributions of a collective. I know I owe my abundance to the kindness of my family, my grief, my friends, my work, my art and trees.

I have channeled these feelings by creating complex and vivid forest-like compositions, seeking to celebrate the joyous force of trees together and the power of their collective unity.

Address: Sunderland Lounge Hall, Cinema Road, Hobsonville Point

Wheelchair accessible venue

About the artist

Trained as an architect in Mexico and New Zealand, Isabel has been living in Hobsonville Point for the past 10 years. She launched her creative practice Arboria Studio last year and works as an art tutor and teacher aid.

Her paintings are representations of trees as the main characters. She creates with bold colorful acrylic, mixed media and watercolours, bringing arboric compositions to life.
